Luke 4:18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because He has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor…
In the Old Testament, in Leviticus 2:1 it says: “When anyone offers a grain offering to the Lord, his offering shall be of fine flour. And he shall pour oil on it…”. Oil in the Bible speaks of the anointing of the Holy Spirit. And the grain offering which had oil on it speaks of Jesus’ humanity being anointed by the Holy Spirit.
in Luke 4:18 where Jesus is anointed by the Holy Spirit is exactly what this prophetic picture in Leviticus 2 is pointing to.
The anointing of the Holy Spirit was the source of Jesus' power. It wasn’t until the Holy Spirit came upon Him after rising out of the Jordan river, that the anointing power came upon Jesus.
Philippians reveals that Jesus literally “emptied” Himself of the deity power He possessed and became a humble servant in human form. (Philippians 2:7) This is why He needed to be anointed by the Holy Spirit before He could start His ministry – though He was fully God, He did things by the power of the Holy Spirit becoming a role model for you and I today.
Jesus was anointed to bless people with the preaching of Good News; to heal broken lives; to deliver those held captive; to enable the blind to see, both literally and spiritually.
Today, Jesus' anointing has come upon you.
1 John 2:20 says, “But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth”. It continues in verse 27 stating, “the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you…”
How is this anointing released? It is by calling upon the name of Jesus.
There is a picture of this in Song of Solomon 1:3. These “songs” are love stories representing Christ and His beloved church and in verse 3 it says, “Pleasing is the fragrance of your perfumes, your name is like perfume poured out…”
That "perfume" is a picture of the anointing of the Holy Spirit and it is poured out at the Name of the Bridegroom. Today, Jesus is the Bridegroom of the Church and the anointing of the Holy Spirit is poured out when you call upon the Name of Jesus.
In prayer, during worship – call upon the Name of Jesus and the anointing power of the Holy Spirit is poured out. That anointing heals and breaks the power of bondages. It breaks the chains of insecurity, addictions, curses, strongholds and spiritual powers of the enemy.
Call upon the name of Jesus today (Romans 10:13). Allow the anointing power of Jesus' Name to bring you deliverance, healing, protection, and provision in your life!
