John 1:1 In the beginning, was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
The Bible says Jesus is the Word made flesh. The Word of God and Jesus are one. Jesus was there in the beginning and He is God.
When we invite Jesus into our hearts, we are inviting God’s Word into our life. Yes, we have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. But the way we grow in understanding, knowledge, faith, and trust is through receiving His Word.
The Word of God says in Proverbs 2:11 that understanding will keep you. Hosea 4:6 says that we are destroyed through a lack of knowledge. Romans 10:17 says that faith comes by hearing the Word of God. Proverbs 3:5 says to trust in the Lord with all your heart.
All these scriptures point to God’s Word as the source of understanding, knowledge, wisdom, faith, and trust in God. Every time we feed upon the Word of God, we will grow in understanding, knowledge, faith, and trust in Jesus. Spending time in God’s Word is how we prioritize Jesus in our life.
But let me go a little deeper because there are two forms of the Word of God in our life.
The Greek text for “Word” is translated two ways in the Bible: Logos and Rhema. Logos means the written word of God, in its entirety. Rhema is the spoken word of God or receiving a personal revelation of God’s Word. We receive knowledge from the logos word as we read and study it. But we receive a rhema word (understanding or revelation) from the Holy Spirit as He reveals it to us, or as we hear the Word of God being preached to us in church.
Jesus says, “Man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4). Scripture gives us general principles for daily living. But each day, we also need to be led by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit’s rhema words become the food, wisdom, direction, dreams, and visions of our life!
Where the logos word of God provides us with knowledge and know-how, the rhema provides us with personal wisdom, personal understanding, and the life of God. It is very powerful. The rhema word is what deposits faith, joy, wisdom, health, provision, and the power of God in your life!
Peter was able to walk on water because he received a rhema word from Jesus (Matthew 14:22-33).
The Centurion’s servant was healed because he received a rhema word from Jesus (Matthew 8:5-13).
Paul boldly became the apostle to the gentile world, through a rhema word from Jesus. (Acts 9:15-16).
We need to have both the logos and the rhema in our world. Whenever you receive a rhema, it will never contradict the logos – but the rhema is what keeps you nourished, alive and filled with the fulness of God for each day.
