YOUR REFUGE AND FORTRESS
Psalm 91:1-2 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord “He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in Him will I trust.”
Your thinking and your believing are paramount when it comes to trusting in the Lord.
The Psalmist said: “…my God, in Him will I trust!”.
David is a great illustration for us. He was hard-pressed on all sides. He had enemies coming toward him from every direction. But David had learned a very powerful secret in the Kingdom of God – to simply trust in the Lord. To trust that the Lord is your refuge and your fortress.
Moses is another great example. He had all the forces of Egypt chasing him, but he trusted in the refuge and fortress of the Lord.
Every day we can be bombarded with all sorts of bad news about plane crashes, terrorist attacks, natural disasters, diseases and new strains of viruses. We hear about freak accidents and if you are not careful you can start believing there is nowhere that is safe. You start thinking, "where can I go or what can I do to avoid all this."
The truth is, when you look to the things of the world for your refuge and fortress, you are in trouble. But when you look to Jesus as your refuge and your fortress, that’s when you can stand under the protection and the shadow of the Almighty. God says, “You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day, nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday” (Psalm 91:5-6).
What this verse is saying is whether there are natural disasters, freak accidents, deadly viruses or terrorist attacks, you do not need to fear these things at any time. Why? Because you have made the Lord your dwelling place! That means you have angels who have been charged to watch over you and your loved ones (Psalm 91:9-11).
All you have to do is trust the Lord. Do not get worried or anxious but to keep your faith in God. Whenever you sense a worry or a concern rising up, just thank the Lord, reminding yourself that God alone is your refuge and your fortress.
Just learn to be in agreement with what God says about the situation.
Amos 3:3 How can two walk together unless they agree?
Learn how to agree with God. If God says something in His Word, agreeing with Him means you are going to put your trust in what He says in His Word. If He says He is your refuge and your fortress – that settles it.
By faith, see yourself standing under the shadow of the Almighty God. There is nothing that can harm you in this place. You do not need to fear, or worry or be concerned about your children because, by faith, you are standing in the shadow of His protection.
Even if you develop symptoms of the flu or the virus, or you lose your job, or you are attacked. Fear not! You will not be defeated nor destroyed. Jesus is right there with you. He will carry you through to the other side and you will emerge stronger and more glorious in the Lord!
